An urgent multi-agency search is continuing for an 11-year-old boy who went missing after being seen entering the River Don in Mexborough, South Yorkshire on Saturday evening. According to GB News, police were called to the scene at approximately 8pm after reports that the child had entered the water and had not resurfaced. Multiple emergency services were immediately deployed to the area to begin search operations.
The National Police Air Service deployed a helicopter to assist with the search from above, while Yorkshire Ambulance Service and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue also attended the scene alongside police officers. The search continued through the night and into Sunday, with specialist water rescue teams working along the stretch of the River Don where the boy was last seen.
The incident is the latest in a series of tragedies connected to open water during the recent heatwave that has gripped much of the United Kingdom. GB News reported that at least 14 young people have died after getting into difficulty in open water during the current spell of hot weather, highlighting the dangers posed by rivers, lakes and other natural bodies of water during periods of extreme heat.
Authorities have repeatedly warned about the risks of swimming in open water, particularly in rivers where currents can be deceptively strong and water temperatures significantly colder than expected even during warm weather. The River Don, which flows through the heart of South Yorkshire, has been the site of previous water-related incidents and is known for unpredictable currents in certain stretches.
The family of the missing boy is being supported by specialist officers while the search operation continues. Police have urged anyone who was in the area of the River Don in Mexborough on Saturday evening and who may have witnessed anything to come forward with information. The search is expected to continue throughout Sunday with additional resources being brought in to assist.
