Six people were arrested on Sunday after a pro-Palestine rally was held outside a synagogue in north London, an event that drew a heavy police presence as officers worked to keep rival groups apart. The demonstration took place outside Edgware United Synagogue, and it ended with a number of arrests as the situation on the ground grew tense.
Footage that circulated on social media captured the moment officers moved in, showing police detaining protesters during the gathering. The images of the arrests spread quickly online, drawing attention to a confrontation that played out in a residential corner of the capital over the course of the day.
According to accounts of the events, the arrests came after demonstrators from either side of the dispute clashed at the scene. With supporters of opposing positions gathered in close proximity, police were left to step in physically to separate the groups and bring the situation back under control.
The synagogue itself had organised a counter-protest in response to the rally. Those behind the counter-demonstration described the pro-Palestine gathering as harassment and bullying directed at the Jewish community, framing the event outside their place of worship as an act of intimidation rather than legitimate protest.
A senior officer overseeing the policing operation acknowledged the heightened sensitivities of holding such a protest in that location, saying the potential to cause intimidation was greater in these circumstances. The officer added that police would use the full range of powers available to them to prevent serious disruption around the site.
By the end of the day, six people had been taken into custody as the police operation continued at the scene.
