Van driver hailed as hero after helping police catch suspect in Kent

A van driver in Kent is being praised as an unlikely hero after giving armed police officers an impromptu ride during a foot chase, helping them arrest a suspect wanted over an alleged serious assault. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer joined the tributes.

A van driver in Kent is being celebrated as an unlikely hero after he stopped to give armed police officers an impromptu ride in the middle of a chase, helping them catch a suspect on the run. The moment was captured on video and has since spread widely on social media, turning an ordinary motorist into the talk of his local area.

According to the account given on BBC News, officers had been trying to make an arrest over an alleged serious assault when the suspect ran off. The police gave chase on foot, but they were struggling to close the gap and bring the man to a halt as he fled down the road.

That was when the van driver pulled up and offered to help. He let the officers jump in, and because his vehicle had a sliding side door, the officer was able to keep watch on the fleeing suspect as they raced along the street, covering an estimated 200 to 300 yards before the pursuit came to an end.

With the gap finally closed, the officer was able to jump back out of the van and make the arrest. Commentators described the scene as something out of a film, but in reverse, noting that this time it was not the police chasing down a vehicle but a member of the public stepping in to do the chasing on their behalf.

Kent police were quick to express their thanks. In a statement attributed to a superintendent, the force said the successful arrest might not have been possible without this member of the public and his video, adding that they should feel proud and that they were truly grateful for what he had done.

The story reached the very top of government. The Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, posted on X in praise of the driver, writing that not all heroes wear uniforms and that some happen to be driving a van. His message was a sign of just how far and how fast the footage had travelled.

Locals, too, were full of admiration. People in the area said they had all seen the clip and had heard the story even without witnessing it, with one man describing the driver simply as a hero. Asked whether he would have done the same, another resident said he hoped that he would have acted in exactly the same way.
