Royal Marines seize sanctioned Russian shadow fleet tanker in Channel

Royal Marines have seized a sanctioned Russian shadow fleet tanker in the English Channel in a dramatic overnight operation. Prime Minister Keir Starmer called it another blow to Russia and a warning to those funding the war in Ukraine.

Royal Marines have seized a sanctioned Russian shadow fleet tanker in the English Channel in a dramatic operation carried out overnight. Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the action as another blow to Russia, saying it serves as a reminder to those fuelling President Putin's war in Ukraine that they cannot hide. The interception marks a striking escalation in Britain's efforts to confront the covert fleet Moscow uses to keep its oil revenues flowing.

The operation took place in the early hours of the morning, and the footage of the raid is grainy and dark as a result. The images show Chinook helicopters carrying the Royal Marines, who can be seen fast roping from the aircraft down onto the deck of the vessel. It is the kind of high risk boarding the military reserves for moments when speed and surprise are essential to taking control of a ship at sea.

Once on board, the marines were heavily armed and equipped with night vision goggles as they fanned out across the tanker. According to the coverage, they moved door to door through the vessel, methodically checking for any potential threat, since they could not be certain who was on board beyond the crew. The marines were also operating alongside specialists from the National Crime Agency and police trained to board ships off the English coast.

The decision to approach from the air reflects a careful assessment of the danger involved. Such an operation, with helicopters bringing marines in close, is used when the forces do not believe there is a threat of armed attack from the vessel, because they do not want aircraft coming close if they could be shot down. In this case, the authorities had clearly established that the tanker did not pose that kind of threat and could be approached from above.

The vessel itself is a Cameroon flagged tanker, and the British believe it is part of Russia's shadow fleet carrying sanctioned oil. This shadow fleet is made up of ships able to transport goods, particularly oil, through waters they would otherwise be barred from sailing in. By detaining one of these vessels, the United Kingdom aims to disrupt the funding source that helps sustain what officials describe as an unlawful war.

A government minister said the Prime Minister had instructed the forces to be on the front foot and to take decisive action in order to keep the country safe and to deal with the threat posed by Russia. He paid tribute to the Navy officers and others involved in carrying out the operation, calling it no small achievement while stressing that it was also a significant blow to the Russians. Cutting off the funding for the war, he said, is one of the central ways to ensure that Ukraine prevails.

The scale of the challenge, however, remains immense. Officials acknowledged that this is the first vessel seized out of around 700 ships believed to be operating in this way, even though the war began in 2022 and it is now 2026. It was also noted that just under 100 shadow fleet vessels had passed through British waters, and that the Prime Minister had said back in March that he intended to intercept them, making this operation the first concrete delivery on that pledge.
