Three members of the Royal Navy have died during a helicopter training exercise in Devon. The Royal Navy released a statement confirming the deaths, saying its thoughts and sympathies are with the families and friends of the service personnel at this sad time.
The helicopter crashed into a field near Sauton in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that emergency services attended the scene, adding that several road closures were put in place around the A386 and the A30 Sauton Cross slip and services area.
The crash site is located just north of Dartmoor, where Navy helicopters are often seen conducting training exercises. The area sits between two air stations at Yeovilton in Somerset and Culdrose in Cornwall, both of which serve as key bases for Royal Navy aviation operations.
The families of the service personnel have been informed and have requested a period of grace before further details are released. The Royal Navy has asked that their wishes be respected during this difficult time.
Defence Secretary John Healey said he was devastated by the loss of the three service personnel, describing them as having served with excellence. He added that they will be much missed by their colleagues and the wider military community.
The Princess of Wales, who serves as Commodore-in-Chief of the Fleet Air Arm, expressed her sadness in a personally signed message posted on social media. She wrote that she and Prince William hold the families and friends of those who died in their hearts at this very difficult time.
It is understood that the Princess and Prince of Wales will contact the families of those who died in the coming days. An investigation into the cause of the crash is expected to be launched by the relevant military and civilian authorities.
