Nigerian Governors Forum resolves to back state police push and national solar super grid plan

The Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) has announced a set of resolutions following a meeting in which the governors deliberated on issues affecting the country. According to the communique read after what the forum described as extensive deliberations, the governors agreed on measures touching on internal security and the expansion of electricity access. The resolutions cover both the effort to establish state police and a national solar power initiative.

On security, the forum said it received a presentation from the NGF Secretariat and a delegation of the Attorneys General of the states on efforts to support the establishment of state police in Nigeria. The governors noted that a dedicated consultation had been held on the constitutional amendments and the legal frameworks that such a reform would require.

The governors emphasized that any state police structure should be culturally sound and aligned with the principles of federalism as well as the rights of citizens. The forum described the work as a collaborative effort and said the outcomes of the consultations would strengthen the states' collective position as the proposal advances.

The forum also received a presentation on what was described as the National Solar Super Grid Initiative. The proposal seeks to expand access to electricity through large-scale, decentralized solar generation that would be integrated with a national high-voltage transmission network.

According to the communique, the governors noted the initiative's potential to support industrialization, improve energy security, strengthen state electricity markets, and accelerate economic growth. They presented it as part of the wider effort to address the country's long-standing challenges in the power sector.

The governors reiterated their commitment to the ongoing power sector reforms and to strengthening collaboration among stakeholders in order to expand access to reliable and affordable electricity for Nigerians. The forum said the resolutions reflected its continued focus on matters directly affecting the states and their residents.
