A group of armed men attacked a students hostel in Ebonyi State, robbing those inside and leaving some of them injured. The raid on a place meant to be a safe space for students has raised fresh concerns about how exposed such accommodation can be to criminals, and police have launched a pursuit of the attackers.
According to the account, the attack unfolded in the dead of night. The armed men broke into the students hostel at around one in the morning on Tuesday, catching the occupants off guard. Once inside, the attackers robbed the students of their personal belongings before fleeing the scene.
The students did not escape the ordeal unharmed. Some of them were injured during the attack, and the injured students are now receiving medical treatment at a hospital that has not been disclosed. The focus, for now, is on their recovery as the investigation gets under way.
A key factor highlighted in the aftermath was the lack of basic protection at the site. It was revealed that the school hostels have no fence and no security post, a gap that made the location porous and easy for criminals to invade. That absence of physical security appears to have left the students particularly vulnerable to the night-time raid.
The police moved to respond once they were alerted to what had happened. The police spokesperson in Ebonyi State, Joshua Okandu, confirmed the incident and said that upon receiving information about the attack, officers were mobilised immediately to track down the perpetrators.
By the time officers reached the hostel, however, the attackers were already gone. Upon arriving at the scene, the criminals had escaped into the bush, but the police said they are actively trailing the gang in an effort to apprehend them and recover all of the stolen items taken from the students.
As the search continues, official communication around the case remains limited. At the time the report was filed, the school authorities were yet to issue any official statement regarding the attack. The incident adds to wider worries about the safety of students in their places of study and residence, and about the need for stronger security measures around such hostels.
