Troops of the joint task force in north east Nigeria, Operation Hadin Kai, have neutralised several terrorists and rescued abductees during recent offensives, Channels Television reported. The operation, carried out under the wider Operation Desert Sanity, is part of the sustained military campaign against the insurgency that has gripped the north east of the country for years.
The gains were set out in a statement released by the operation's media information officer, Lieutenant Colonel Sonny Oba. According to the statement, the offensives led to the rescue of abducted civilians, the neutralisation of terrorists and an increase in the surrender of the family members of insurgents, which the military presented as signs of growing pressure on the armed groups.
At the centre of the announcement was what the military described as a major humanitarian breakthrough. While conducting offensive operations in the Amuda general area, troops of the operation successfully intercepted and rescued two abductees from the Ngoshe community, returning the captives to safety after their ordeal in the hands of the armed group.
The statement detailed where the two victims had been held before their rescue. According to the account, they had been kept at a terrorist enclave located within the Mandara Mountains, the rugged range along the country's eastern frontier that has long offered hideouts to armed groups operating in the region.
The circumstances of the rescue were tied to the military pressure on those hideouts. The statement said the abductees managed to escape following intense fire missions on the terrorist positions, which forced their captors to abandon them and allowed the two to reach the troops operating in the area.
Beyond the rescue itself, the operation pointed to a broader trend it said was emerging from the offensives. The reported increase in the surrender of insurgents' family members was held up as evidence that the campaign was steadily wearing down the support structures around the armed groups in the north east.
The military framed the developments as a win for the security forces and a reason to maintain the momentum of operations across the region. Officials indicated that the troops would press on with their offensives, presenting the rescue and the neutralisation of terrorists as part of the wider effort to root out insecurity in the area.
