A series of funeral events have been held to honour High Chief Makinwa, who held the chieftaincy title of Ujomu of Owo and passed away on April 22, 2026. According to Channels Television, the ceremonies began with a service of songs in Lagos and concluded with a thanksgiving service and burial in his hometown of Owo, in Ondo State.
The service of songs, together with a commendation service in Lagos, signalled the beginning of the series of events organised in his honour. It set the tone for the days of remembrance that followed, as relatives and associates gathered to pay their respects to the departed chief.
The thanksgiving service drew a wide gathering of eminent personalities, alongside his children, grandchildren and close associates. They came together to bid farewell to a man whose passing was felt well beyond his immediate family and the community he served.
The Olowo of Owo, Oba Obajibade Ogunoye, was represented at the ceremonies by his queen, Olanike. Clerics from the Anglican Diocese of Lagos and of Owo were in attendance, and they were joined by clergy from other denominations who came to honour the late chief.
Music formed an important part of the tribute. The cathedral choir, as well as students from the former citizen schools linked to him, performed special renditions in his honour, lending a solemn and reflective atmosphere to the service.
Tributes recalled a life shaped by service and faith. In Lagos he worshipped at Our Saviour's, and in Owo at St Andrew's, while he also served his community, the Olowo and the wider kingdom. Those who knew him remembered him as a builder and a unifier who brought people together.
Family members, friends and close associates described a life centred on duty, dignity and devotion. They said his legacy would live on and that his impact transcends time, offering prayers that his soul would continue to find peace and rest as the community marked his final farewell.
