The Edo State Police Command in Nigeria has announced a fresh round of results from its security operations, presenting scores of suspects arrested for various violent crimes and confirming the rescue of dozens of kidnapped victims. According to Channels Television, the command framed the outcome as evidence of its sustained pressure on kidnappers, cultists, armed robbers and other criminals in its bid to keep Edo State safe.
In total, the command paraded 77 suspects arrested across the state, presenting them as the product of a series of coordinated operations. The command stressed that the parade was intended to demonstrate accountability and transparency in policing, and to keep residents informed about the ongoing security efforts being carried out on their behalf in different parts of the state.
The breakdown of those arrested spans some of the most serious categories of violent crime affecting the state. According to the figures, the suspects include 32 alleged kidnappers, 15 suspected cultists and three suspected armed robbers, alongside 11 murder suspects and two people held for the unlawful possession of firearms, underlining the range of criminal activity the command says it is confronting.
The command also reported the arrest of 14 other suspects linked to rape and other forms of sexual and gender-based violence, including cases of defilement. The inclusion of these cases placed sexual violence alongside kidnapping and cultism among the offences that the police in Edo State say they are actively pursuing and bringing before the justice system.
Alongside the arrests, the command announced that it had successfully rescued 38 kidnapped victims. According to the police, the rescues were achieved through intelligence-driven operations and coordinated tactical responses carried out across different parts of the state, in what the command presented as one of the central achievements of the period under review.
The State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, who presented the suspects, described the results as a demonstration of the command's commitment to protecting lives and property and to promoting accountability in policing. He said the command intended to remain proactive, responsive and relentless in confronting every form of violent crime across Edo State.
The commissioner further commended the professionalism and sacrifices of the officers involved, as well as the cooperation of other security agencies and residents across the state. He stressed that security remained a shared responsibility and that continued collaboration between the police and the public was crucial to the command's operational accomplishments in the fight against criminality.
