Nigeria has marked the 84th birthday of elder statesman and former head of state General Abdulsalami Abubakar, with a celebration that placed his legacy at the centre of attention. Tributes throughout the event spotlighted his role in enthroning and sustaining democracy in the country, presenting him as a figure whose contribution continues to shape national life.
Speakers described Abubakar as belonging to a rare class of leaders whose influence transcends the offices they once occupied. His record was hailed as a testament to humility in leadership, patriotism in service and wisdom in statesmanship. Not only did you initiate and ensure the restoration of democracy, you sustained it, one tribute declared, capturing the tone of admiration that ran through the gathering.
The celebrant was also honoured for his continued role in peace building. Speakers recalled that when Nigeria stood at the crossroads, the responsibility of leadership was entrusted to him, and that he understood both the weight of that responsibility and the demands of the moment. He pledged to return the country to democratic rule, and according to those who paid tribute, he fulfilled that pledge faithfully and honourably.
A central part of the ceremony was the unveiling of three books written in honour of the elder statesman, titled Call of Duty, Nigeria's Grand Patriot and Mediating for Peace in Africa. The works were presented as a summary of his life and legacy. The high point of the event came with the cutting of the cake by the celebrant, supported by his immediate family, friends and close associates.
A South African president joined the event virtually to deliver a keynote address, highlighting the lessons to be learned from the legacies of the celebrant. He urged the audience to draw on the example of leaders who put service above self, saying that nations must learn to imbibe what works for others and discard those things that retard their progress.
The occasion also carried a pointed political message. The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, used his remarks to warn that enemies of democracy are sponsoring insecurity in Nigeria in order to give democracy a bad name. Despite that warning, he expressed optimism that the challenge would ultimately be defeated and that the country's democratic order would hold.
According to Senator Akpabio, President Bola Tinubu is grappling with many enemies, several of whom he accused of sponsoring insecurity across the country. By linking those concerns to the celebration of Abubakar's democratic legacy, the Senate President framed the birthday gathering not only as a tribute to the past but also as a reminder of the challenges facing Nigeria's democracy today.
