Nine farmers killed in gunmen raid on Kaduna farming community

At least nine farmers have been killed and several others abducted in a deadly raid on a farming community in Birnin Gwari District of Kaduna State, in northwest Nigeria. According to Channels Television, gunmen stormed the fields and opened fire on the farmers as they worked. The attack follows an earlier assault in the same district, in Danwatu village, where at least six farmers were killed and 20 others abducted.

At least nine farmers have been killed and several others abducted in a deadly raid on a farming community in Kaduna State, in northwest Nigeria. According to Channels Television, the gunmen stormed the fields in Birnin Gwari District, opening fire on the farmers as they were working. The scale of the attack has once again drawn attention to the vulnerability of rural communities in the region who depend on their land for a living.

The assailants opened fire on the farmers directly at their place of work, turning what should have been an ordinary day in the fields into a scene of bloodshed. The gunmen, described as bandits, were also reported to have attempted to rob those they attacked, combining the killings and abductions with an effort to seize whatever they could from the community.

Beyond those killed, several other farmers were abducted during the raid, deepening the impact of the assault on the affected community. Such abductions typically leave families in prolonged uncertainty over the fate of their relatives, as those seized are taken away from the scene by the attackers, often into surrounding bush and forest areas.

According to the broadcaster, attacks of this kind are quite regular in that part of the country, where farming settlements have repeatedly come under assault. The recurrence of such raids has made everyday agricultural work a dangerous undertaking for residents, who must weigh the need to tend their fields against the constant threat posed by armed groups.

The latest killing was not an isolated event in the district. Before this attack, at least six other farmers were killed and 20 others abducted during a separate assault in Danwatu village, also in Birnin Gwari District. The two incidents, occurring in the same area, point to a sustained pattern of violence targeting farmers there.

Taken together, the assaults in Birnin Gwari underline the heavy toll that insecurity continues to exact on farming communities in Kaduna State and the wider northwest. With lives lost and residents seized in successive attacks, the pressure on those who work the land remains severe, even as they continue to rely on farming for their survival.
