Nine people have died and twenty-seven others were pulled out alive after a two-storey building caved in within the Alakija area of Satellite Town, in the Amuwo Odofin local government area of Lagos. The structure came down on Thursday, June the 25th, and rescuers spent the following hours sifting through a heap of broken concrete in search of anyone still trapped beneath the debris.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency said the twenty-seven survivors were brought out through a coordinated effort involving its response teams, sister agencies and members of the surrounding communities. Of the nine fatalities recovered from the wreckage, four were adults who had already been confirmed dead before the first responders reached the scene, the agency said.
According to the state government, the building that gave way had already been marked for demolition, and the occupants had been asked to vacate the premises. They refused to leave, a decision that turned a structure flagged as unsafe into the site of one of the city's latest fatal collapses. Officials framed the tragedy as a warning about the risks of ignoring such notices.
The State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, led a government delegation to inspect the ruins. He commiserated with the families of those who lost their lives and their loved ones and wished the injured a speedy recovery, while pledging that all distressed structures and buildings sitting under high tension would be pulled down to prevent further disaster in the area.
To stop similar incidents, the government directed the Lagos State Building Control Agency to begin an immediate structural integrity assessment of the buildings adjoining the collapsed site and to enforce compliance with the building codes in the neighbourhood. The move points to wider concerns about the soundness of nearby properties in a densely built part of the city.
On Odeli Road, where the rescue is centred, emergency teams insisted they would not stop until everyone who might still be buried had been reached. The excavation of the debris is being carried out as a combined effort by Julius Berger and other emergency response units, with heavy equipment brought in to lift slabs and clear the rubble piece by piece.
One of the engineers leading the dig said his crews had already recovered people both alive and dead, and that voices could still be heard from within the collapsed mass. He explained that the team was picking through the wreckage gradually and keeping in contact with those trapped inside so as not to injure them with the machinery. The chairman of the local government area also visited the scene to assess the operation and receive updates from emergency officials.
