United Nigeria Airlines has unveiled two newly acquired Boeing 737-800 aircraft at a ceremony held in Lagos. The two planes were named in honour of two distinguished Nigerians, including the late literary icon, Professor Chinua Achebe, as part of the airline's expansion of its fleet.

According to the airline's management, the gesture reflects cultural and historical significance, while showcasing Nigeria's rich heritage, values and national pride. The unveiling attracted key players in the aviation industry, government officials, traditional leaders, business partners and many others who attended the event.

The chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, said the naming carries cultural and historical significance meant to showcase Nigeria's heritage, pride and excellence, and the need to carry these legacies across cities, countries and continents. He noted that it is the first time in Nigeria that an aircraft bears such names.

Speaking on the choice of honourees, the chairman highlighted how Achebe carried the stories that introduced Africa to the whole world. He described the literary icon as someone diligent, loved and admired by many people, including himself, while also recalling the sacrifices made over the two-year journey to acquiring the aircraft.

A speaker at the unveiling described the newly acquired aircraft as fuel-efficient and very comfortable. He added that the planes have the capability to fly from Lagos to London directly and nonstop, pointing to the range and performance of the new additions to the fleet.

The airline also indicated that it would begin flying above 45 approved international routes, while working to reduce delays and improve the overall service offered to passengers. Speakers at the event commended the airline for the acquisition of the two aircraft.

The chairman used the occasion to call on the government to reveal the aviation revenue-sharing structure in order to improve the sustainability of the sector, while also demanding reductions in charges. He argued that until the government leaves the money for aviation in the accounts of aviation regulators, the services of the regulators will not improve. The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, was among those present at the unveiling.
