Singapore has moved to tighten its grip on online falsehoods by designating two alternative sites linked to the online media platform The Online Citizen, widely known as TOC, as Declared Online Locations. The effect of the designation is that these sites will no longer be allowed to receive financial or material benefits, cutting off a potential source of support.
The mechanism behind the move is Singapore's law against online falsehoods, often referred to as its fake news law. Under that framework, a Declared Online Location, or DOL, is a site that has persistently released multiple falsehoods, and the designation is used by the authorities to flag such platforms and limit how they operate.
What makes this case notable is the nature of the sites involved. According to the authorities, one of the alternative sites is hosted on the same domain as The Online Citizen and mirrors the platform's branding, effectively presenting itself as an extension of the original outlet rather than a wholly separate entity.
The Online Citizen's main website had already been declared a DOL back in 2025. However, the alternative sites had not been subject to the same requirements, because they operated under different web addresses. The latest action appears designed to close that gap, ensuring the mirror sites cannot simply sidestep the designation by using a different URL.
Being named a Declared Online Location does not mean a site has to shut down. Instead, the operators are required to declare their new status and to alert viewers that the location has posted multiple falsehoods, placing a clear notice on the platform so that readers are aware of the designation when they visit.
The development reflects Singapore's broader approach to policing online content, in which the state uses legal designations rather than outright bans to mark out platforms it considers repeat sources of false information. By extending the measure to the mirror sites, the authorities have signalled that simply replicating a site under a new address will not be enough to avoid the consequences attached to the original.
