Amazon is proposing a major new presence on Long Island, and the scale of the plan is drawing both excitement and concern in Holbrook. The company says a new origination center there would mean faster deliveries for the region, but some residents are worried about what the arrival of such a large operation would mean for traffic in the area, setting up a debate over one of the biggest development proposals the community has seen.
The proposal itself is enormous. It is a 1 billion dollar plan to build the largest Amazon facility on Long Island, a 4.2 million square foot site near Sunrise Highway and Beacon Drive, located right next to a busy Costco. The sheer footprint of the project would make it a dominant feature of the local landscape and a significant new hub in Amazon's network.
If built, the facility would mark a milestone for the company's operations in the region. It would be the 10th Amazon facility on Long Island, but the first package origination center, and rather than serving only the immediate area, it would serve the entire Northeast, positioning Holbrook as a key node in how the company moves packages across a wide swath of the country.
The benefits Amazon points to come with a heavy logistical footprint. The company says the site would enable more same-day deliveries, but it would also bring 300 trucks driving in and out of the area every day over a 24-hour period. To address the concerns that come with that volume, Amazon says it submitted a traffic study as part of its application to the town of Islip, along with proposed infrastructure improvements to the surrounding area.
Among residents, the reaction has been decidedly mixed. Some see clear upside, noting that the project would create jobs, especially if the work is fully union, as they argue it should be. Others are uneasy about the pace of development, with one resident describing a sense that Suffolk is becoming what Nassau is, and Nassau is becoming Queens, a feeling that the sprawl is steadily spreading east across the island.
The timeline and stakes are now coming into focus as the community prepares to weigh in. If approved, Amazon says it would take 18 to 24 months to build the facility, and the company estimates it would create 1,000 jobs on Long Island. A community meeting on the proposal was scheduled for the evening at the Holbrook Fire Department, giving residents a chance to voice their views as the project moves through the approval process.
