A prominent piece of downtown Brooklyn's retail landscape is getting a dramatic new chapter. According to News 12, a new entertainment and retail space called BKX is taking over the site of the former Macy's, promising to transform a landmark corner that had sat in transition since the department store's departure.
The change marks the end of one era and the start of another. The Macy's on Fulton Street closed its doors for good last March, leaving a large and prominent space empty in the heart of the borough's main shopping district and prompting questions about what would come next.
Now, that space is being reimagined. Dreamscape Retail says construction is already underway on BKX, described as a six-story retail and entertainment complex rising where Macy's once stood, a project aimed at drawing crowds back to the well-known downtown location.
The developers are pitching a mix of uses under one roof. According to Dreamscape Retail, BKX will feature stores, food, entertainment and wellness offerings, among other attractions, a blend intended to make the complex a destination in its own right rather than a traditional department store.
Those behind the project are not lacking in ambition. If the company executes on its vision the way it expects to, one representative said, BKX will be iconic out of the gate, predicting that people will come from all over the world to see what is being built at the site.
For now, many of the specifics remain under wraps. Dreamscape Retail said more details on the tenants and experiences are coming soon, and that the project is expected to open sometime between late 2027 and 2028, giving downtown Brooklyn a new anchor several years after Macy's moved out.
