Ford is recalling certain Mustang and Mustang Mach-E vehicles over separate defects that federal regulators say could increase the risk of a crash, prompting owners to watch for repair notices.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the larger of the two recalls affects Mustang models. Under certain weather conditions, the windshield wipers may operate only at the high-speed setting, while the windshield washer system may not function properly.
Regulators said that combination could reduce a driver's visibility, one of the reasons the defect was flagged as a potential crash hazard that needed to be addressed.
The second recall involves the Mustang Mach-E, the automaker's electric model. In those vehicles, the rear differential pinion shaft may fracture, a drivetrain problem that carries its own safety concerns.
Ford said dealers will repair or replace the affected parts for free, the standard remedy in safety recalls of this kind, once owners bring their vehicles in.
Owners who believe their vehicle may be covered are typically advised to watch for official recall notices and to follow the instructions provided by the automaker and their local dealership.
