Communities across the US Midwest spent Friday cleaning up after a severe weather outbreak that produced multiple tornadoes and powerful straight line winds. The storms tore across Illinois and Indiana, destroying homes and toppling trees, and residents returned to assess the damage as the worst of the weather moved through.
The outbreak unfolded over roughly 48 hours, and officials warned that the threat was not yet over, with more storms forecast for the same part of the country. The combination of tornadoes and intense winds left a wide path of destruction, flattening homes and bringing down trees across several communities.
One of the hardest hit places was the town of Streator, Illinois, about 80 miles southwest of Chicago, where a tornado touched down and left multiple houses in ruins. Neighbors described huddling together at the height of the storm, and some who came through with their homes intact spoke of their concern for others nearby whose properties were devastated.
The storms also knocked out electricity on a large scale. Early Friday, nearly half a million customers across Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan were left in the dark, and utility crews cautioned that getting the lights back on would not be quick given the scale of the damage.
Crews working in the field described the effort as something far larger than a routine repair. The number of trees and branches that came down on the electrical infrastructure was significant, and one worker said the situation amounted to a rebuild rather than a simple restoration of service.
In northern Indiana, the damage was equally intense, with power lines down and debris scattered across affected areas. Reporting from Merrillville, the picture was the same as elsewhere in the region, with homeowners facing a long stretch of work ahead and neighbors pitching in to help one another recover.
City and emergency officials in the Chicago area said they were coordinating closely with the National Weather Service and a range of utility providers and community partners as the response continued. Authorities reported no deaths or life threatening injuries from the tornadoes, though crews remained braced for additional storms moving into the region.
