More than 80 Long Island beaches closed to swimming

Swimming remains off limits at more than 80 beaches across Long Island because of bacteria that can build up from storm runoff, according to News 12. Officials say 64 beaches in Suffolk County and 20 in Nassau County are under health advisories following this week's heavy rain. Nassau's advisory is expected to be lifted this morning, while Suffolk's is set to remain in place until midnight on Thursday.

Swimming remains off limits at more than 80 beaches across Long Island, according to News 12, as officials warn about water quality following this week's heavy rain.

Authorities said the closures are due to bacteria that can build up from storm runoff, which washes into the water after significant rainfall and can make swimming unsafe.

In all, 64 beaches in Suffolk County and 20 beaches in Nassau County are under health advisories, keeping swimmers out of the water at a long list of shoreline spots.

The timelines for the two counties differ. Nassau County's advisory is expected to be lifted this morning, officials said, allowing beaches there to reopen to swimming sooner.

Suffolk County's advisory, on the other hand, is set to remain in place until midnight on Thursday, keeping its affected beaches closed to swimming for longer.

Officials pointed beachgoers to a full list of the affected beaches, and advisories of this kind are routinely issued after heavy rain as a precaution until bacteria levels return to normal.
