A new experimental drug called daraxonrasib has nearly doubled survival rates for patients with advanced pancreatic cancer in a phase 3 clinical trial presented at ASCO 2026. The drug blocks a mutated protein that fuels tumor growth in over 90% of pancreatic cancer cases, reducing the risk of death by 60%.

A new experimental drug is being called a game changer for treating one of the deadliest forms of cancer. A major clinical trial has found that the drug daraxonrasib nearly doubled survival rates for patients with advanced pancreatic cancer, offering hope for a disease that has long been considered among the most difficult to treat.

The findings, presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology annual meeting and published simultaneously in the New England Journal of Medicine, showed that patients who received daraxonrasib lived on average more than thirteen months, compared to about six point seven months for those who received standard chemotherapy.

Researchers found that the drug works by blocking a mutated protein that fuels tumor growth in more than 90 percent of pancreatic cancer cases. This protein target had eluded treatment for decades, making daraxonrasib's success a major scientific breakthrough in the field of oncology.

The phase 3 RASolute 302 trial demonstrated that daraxonrasib, taken as a daily pill, reduced the risk of death by 60 percent for patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer who had already received prior treatment. These results are described by researchers as unprecedented in the history of pancreatic cancer treatment.

The drug is not yet approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. However, the FDA has granted permission for an expanded access program that allows some patients with previously treated metastatic pancreatic cancer to receive daraxonrasib while the drug continues through the regulatory review process.

Scientists are now exploring whether daraxonrasib could also prove effective against other types of cancer, including lung, colon and ovarian cancers that share similar genetic mutations. If successful, the drug could represent a paradigm shift in how multiple forms of cancer are treated.

Pancreatic cancer remains one of the deadliest forms of cancer, with a five-year survival rate of around 12 percent. The disease kills approximately 50,000 people annually in the United States alone. The breakthrough with daraxonrasib offers the first significant improvement in survival for advanced pancreatic cancer patients in years and has been met with cautious optimism by the medical community worldwide.
