An 8-year-old boy from Yakima who is passionate about soccer is having a once-in-a-lifetime dream granted, after almost dying as an infant. The Make-A-Wish Foundation has stepped in to send Iker to watch the U.S. Men's National Team play at the World Cup, and his family says he is officially on the list to attend a match. For them, his mother explained, the trip is not just about a sport, but about a place where they get to create memories together.
Reaching this moment has been anything but easy. According to his family, Iker was born with a heart condition, and when a pacemaker was not enough, he needed a transplant. They recalled how he came out of the operating room after two code blues were called on him, and about 12 hours later he was on life support, in the most fragile stage of his fight.
From there, the family went through the full process of being interviewed so that he could be placed on the transplant list. What followed was an agonizing stretch of waiting, more than 20 days, before they finally received the news that a donor heart was available for him.
Iker, now older, describes that period with striking calm, saying he was brave when he got his heart transplant and that the experience taught him to never give up and to keep going. To those around him, the message is simple: the little boy is a fighter, a warrior who refused to be defeated by his condition.
In the years since, Iker was cleared to play sports, taking up the goalkeeper position on the field. For his mother Bianca, watching that unfold carries deep meaning. She spoke of her gratitude to the donor, saying that thanks to that gift it is her own child who is now out on the pitch, playing the game he loves and blocking shots on goal.
The theme of resilience follows him everywhere. His nickname is El Guerrero, which means the warrior, and even his team carries the same spirit, named the Yakima Warriors. In his own words, he is a warrior who fights hard and always tries his very best.
The wish itself moved those who helped grant it. A representative from Make-A-Wish said tears streamed down her face as she watched Iker react to learning his dream would come true. This week, the young goalkeeper and his family are set to travel for the trip of a lifetime, heading to the World Cup.
