Toy Story 5 ruled the box office over the weekend, opening to 160 million dollars in North America and claiming the biggest debut of the year so far. The result underlined the enduring pull of the franchise and gave a major lift to cinemas and to the animation business, three decades after the first Toy Story arrived in theaters.
The figure marks the largest start in Disney and Pixar's Toy Story franchise, not adjusted for inflation, surpassing the previous record set by 2019's Toy Story 4, which opened to 120 million dollars. It also ranks as the second-largest opening weekend for an animated movie in history, sitting behind only Incredibles 2.
The 160 million dollar haul came from 4,425 theaters across North America, landing at the higher end of pre-release expectations. It comfortably secured the biggest domestic debut of 2026 to date, moving ahead of the Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which had opened to 131.7 million dollars earlier in the year.
The film also performed strongly abroad. Overseas, Toy Story 5 took in around 152 million dollars, lifting its global opening tally to roughly 312 million dollars. That worldwide start positions the sequel as one of the biggest film launches of the year on both the domestic and international fronts.
Critical and audience reactions have been highly favorable, with the movie carrying a 94 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes and an A grade on CinemaScore exit polls. Such reception sets the film up for a long run in theaters, with industry watchers expecting it to become the highest grossing entry in the franchise, a mark currently held by Toy Story 4 at 1.07 billion dollars.
The rest of the weekend chart trailed well behind the Pixar juggernaut. Steven Spielberg's new science fiction film Disclosure Day opened in second place with around 17 million dollars, while the horror release Obsession landed in third with just over 14 million dollars.
Toy Story 5's debut adds to a brighter stretch for movie theaters and for big-screen animation, demonstrating that established family franchises can still draw large crowds. With strong word of mouth and the summer season ahead, the film appears set to remain a fixture at the top of the box office for weeks to come.
