Florida warned of health care crisis if TPS ends for 113,000 workers

The end of Temporary Protected Status could cause a crisis in Florida's hospitals and nursing homes, a Republican lawmaker has warned. The Florida Immigrant Coalition says 113,000 health care workers on TPS live in the state, including a Haitian nurse in North Miami who fears returning to her home country.

The end of Temporary Protected Status, known as TPS, could cause a crisis in Florida's hospitals and nursing homes, a Republican lawmaker has warned, pointing to the many health care workers who depend on the program.

According to the Florida Immigrant Coalition, 113,000 health care workers who are on TPS live in the state of Florida.

The concern is especially pronounced in North Miami, which is home to one of the largest Haitian communities outside of Haiti.

CBS News Miami spoke with a nurse who, out of fear, asked to be called only Marie and to have her face hidden. She said she considers the city her home for now.

Marie said she was a victim of kidnapping in 2022 while she was still living in her home country, and she is afraid of what she would face if she were forced to return.

Americans can't live in Haiti, so why would she go to Haiti, she asked, expressing her fear of being sent back to a country she considers unsafe.
