British driver Andy Green has set a world record for the fastest run in a hydrogen powered car, racing across the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah on Tuesday. The car reached more than 406 miles an hour, a landmark for the emerging category of hydrogen powered vehicles. The achievement adds another chapter to the story of one of the most famous names in high speed record breaking.

Green is no newcomer to this kind of challenge. A former British fighter pilot and a veteran land speed record holder, he brought years of experience at extreme speeds to the project. His familiarity with pushing machines to their limits was on display again as he guided the hydrogen car across the vast salt surface at record breaking pace.

The vehicle itself, known as Hydro Max, was built to prove a point about the power of hydrogen. It is a zero carbon emission car whose only output at the salt flats was water, a deliberate contrast to the fossil fuelled machines usually associated with speed records. The car was created using JCB technology, the British engineering firm behind the project, working alongside a team of world class engineers.

Remarkably, the record run suggested there was still more to come. During the attempt, Green said he actually had to lift off the accelerator and slow down through the measured mile because the car had already hit its limiting speed. In other words, the vehicle was capable of going even faster, hinting at the untapped potential of the technology under the bonnet.

The setting was fitting for such a feat. The Bonneville Salt Flats, a vast expanse in Utah, have for decades been a celebration of speed, with events like Bonneville Speed Week long associated with fossil fuel powered record attempts. Against that backdrop, a hydrogen car leaving only water in its wake marked a striking shift in what the famous salt flats can represent.

For those behind the project, the run was about far more than a number on a timing screen. The aim was to demonstrate that hydrogen can serve as another form of green energy for transport, and the car was described as the first of a new kind of high speed, straight line racing machine. The record was intended as proof that clean power and extreme performance can go together.

Green framed the record as a milestone in a wider adventure. He spoke of it as a fantastic experience working with world class engineers and using world leading JCB technology to create something genuinely new in motorsport. With the car showing it had speed to spare, the run at Bonneville positioned hydrogen power as a serious contender in the pursuit of records once dominated by petrol and jet engines.
