New York to host free World Cup final watch party at Central Park

New York City officials have announced a free public watch party for the World Cup final at Central Park's Great Lawn on July 19, with room for 50,000 people. Mayor Mamdani, Governor Kathy Hochul and the FIFA president unveiled the plan, which requires registering in advance through a lottery that opens June 11. The move is aimed at fans who cannot afford match tickets, which have ranged from hundreds to thousands of dollars; the mayor also announced 1,000 tickets at $50 each for New Yorkers.

New York City is preparing a large free public event for soccer fans, centered on the biggest match of the World Cup. Officials have announced that there will be a free watch party for the World Cup final at Central Park, held on the park's Great Lawn. The gathering is set for July 19 and is designed to let huge numbers of people experience the final together in one place.

The scale of the event is significant. According to the plan, 50,000 people will be able to attend the Great Lawn watch party and follow the game on-site. Despite being free, the watch party will not be open to anyone who simply shows up, as those who want to take part will have to register in advance, with the lottery to secure a spot opening on June 11.

The announcement was made by some of the area's most prominent officials. Mayor Mamdani, alongside Governor Kathy Hochul and the FIFA president and others, unveiled the watch party for the final. The involvement of city, state and tournament leaders underlines how big a moment the final is expected to be for the region hosting it.

Officials framed the watch party as a way to make the final accessible to everyone. The game itself is expected to be one of the most watched sporting events in the world, and it is taking place right in the New York area. With many fans unable to get tickets to the match, the aim is for people to still be able to experience the final together rather than miss out entirely.

Part of the reason for that push is the cost of attending the games in person. Tickets have been ranging in the hundreds up to the thousands of dollars for the major tournament, a situation that has even prompted investigations by state attorneys general into why those prices have been fluctuating so much. For many fans, those prices put the matches out of reach.

Getting to the stadium adds another barrier. On top of the high ticket prices, limited or more expensive transit options just to reach MetLife Stadium have made attending the games not completely accessible for all soccer fans. The Central Park watch party is being positioned as an alternative that removes both the ticket cost and the travel hurdle.

Alongside the watch party, officials also pointed to other ways of widening access. Mayor Mamdani announced that there will be 1,000 tickets sold for $50 each for New Yorkers, while New Jersey officials said they expected soon to announce a similar type of program for residents there, with Governor Mikey Sherrill due to host a FIFA-related announcement in Hackensack. For the Central Park event itself, organizers stressed that the lottery to register opens on June 11.
