A debate over transgender athletes is heating up in the WNBA, thrust into the spotlight by an unusual move from outside the women's game. Two former NBA players, including a former Knicks center, declared themselves eligible for the WNBA draft, saying that they identify as women, a step that has forced the league to confront questions about who is eligible to play.
The declarations came from two recognisable figures in basketball. Enes Kanter Freedom, who once played center for the Knicks, and Royce White both said they would enter the WNBA draft, framing their move around self-declaration and drawing immediate national attention to how the league defines eligibility for its players.
The controversy traces back to comments made by a current player. It stems from remarks by the Indiana Fever's Sophie Cunningham, who supports barring transgender women from the league. Cunningham said she wants to protect young girls in a locker room or young girls in sport who, in her words, should not have to go against biological men.
In response to the growing debate, the league has laid out a process for addressing the issue rather than taking an immediate stance. In a new memo, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert wrote that the matter will be presented to a task force of team presidents and general managers next week, moving the question into a formal review by league leadership.
Engelbert also framed the discussion as a constructive one. She said that when people can come together and have these conversations, it is so healthy, suggesting the league sees value in working through the disagreement openly rather than trying to shut down the debate as it decides how to proceed.
The players themselves have staked out their own position through their union. The players union said it embraces inclusion, but at the same time warned that its members will not be used as political pawns, signalling that the athletes want a say in how the sensitive issue is handled and resist being drawn into a broader political fight.
