Grand Theft Auto 6, described as one of the most anticipated video game releases of all time, is making headlines for a different reason. According to Fox 26, hackers targeted the game's developer and leaked a massive amount of unreleased footage and confidential details online, ahead of the game's launch later this year.
Fox 26 reported that the unreleased Grand Theft Auto 6 gameplay is being posted online by someone using the name cyber leak. The outlet said the material is being released piece by piece, and that the leaks have been appearing in automatic cycles rather than all at once, according to what has been shared so far.
According to Fox 26, 27 minutes of new footage was released the day before, first on Netflix and then on YouTube, ahead of the game's November launch. The report presented this official footage separately from the leaked material, noting it gave fans a look at the title before its planned release.
Fox 26 pointed to the scale of the franchise, reporting that Grand Theft Auto 5 sold more than 230 million copies and made more than 800 million dollars in the first 24 hours. The outlet added that the series has long been controversial for its graphic violence and adult content, but that there is no denying its enormous reach.
Speaking to Fox 26, technology expert Juan Guevara-Torres said cyber leak is an alias for someone pretending to be a hacker who had access to a large amount of footage. He said that, based on what he knows, someone who had access to the game, possibly a contractor or a member of the development team, may be connected to the leak.
According to Fox 26, cyber leak has said that even if the person is identified, the automatic leaks will continue, adding that they personally have to stop the leak each day because it runs on automatic rotation. Guevara-Torres told Fox 26 that law enforcement has tools to try to determine the identity of the individual or group behind the posts.
