The Bridgeport, Connecticut, police department is in mourning after one of its officers was killed in a motorcycle crash while off duty. The loss has hit the department and the surrounding communities hard, as colleagues and neighbors remember a man who had devoted much of his life to public service both in uniform and as a volunteer.

The officer has been identified as Cooper Whiteside, known to those close to him as Coop. He was 38 years old and had been a member of the Bridgeport police department for two years, having begun his service in July of 2024, a relatively young officer whose career was still in its early chapters.

Whiteside's commitment to service stretched well beyond his police work. For several years he had also served as a volunteer firefighter and an emergency medical technician, including with departments in Brookfield and West Redding, roles that placed him on the front lines of helping others in moments of crisis.

The crash that claimed his life happened close to home. Whiteside lived in Danbury, and it was there, on Sugar Hollow Road, that his motorcycle collided with an SUV in the early hours of Monday morning, according to police investigating the scene.

The collision proved devastating. Whiteside and his passenger, 34-year-old Brittany Islami, both died at the scene. The driver of the SUV was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, while investigators began the work of trying to determine exactly how the two vehicles came together.

For now, key questions remain unanswered. Police say the cause of the crash remains under review, and no further details about how the collision unfolded have been released as the investigation continues in the days after the deadly wreck.

The department has paid tribute to its fallen officer. The Bridgeport chief of police said Whiteside had served with honor and dignity from the moment he joined the force in July of 2024, adding that he would be greatly missed and extending condolences to his family, friends and fellow officers as the community grieves.
