A chase that started with gunfire in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and ended with a crash in neighbouring Trumbull has led to the arrest of two teenagers, while police continue to search for at least one more person. Authorities said the pursuit began the previous night after eight gunshots were fired, setting off a response that would stretch across municipal lines.
According to police, three people got into a stolen Honda Civic in the wake of the gunfire and drove out of Bridgeport into Trumbull. The decision to flee in the stolen car turned what began as a report of shots fired into a moving pursuit, with officers following the vehicle as it crossed from one community into the next.
The flight came to an abrupt end when the suspects crashed the Honda into a curb. After the crash, police said, the occupants got out of the car and ran off on foot, scattering into the area and forcing officers to mount a search of the surrounding neighbourhood in the dark.
To track down those who had fled, police brought in significant resources. Officers deployed police dogs, drones and helicopters to comb the area, using both ground teams and aerial support in an effort to locate the suspects who had abandoned the vehicle and disappeared on foot.
The search led to two arrests. Police said they tracked down and took into custody a pair of 19-year-olds in connection with the incident. The arrests accounted for two of the people believed to have been involved, but authorities indicated the case was not yet fully resolved.
One person remained unaccounted for as the investigation continued, with police still working to determine the full circumstances behind the gunfire that triggered the chase. The case left authorities piecing together what led up to the eight shots in Bridgeport and tracing the path of the stolen car into Trumbull.
