According to the account given to News 12 New York, Jonathan was described by those who knew him as someone who was not a street person, very funny and very into sports. On the day of the shooting, he was said to be on his way home from work and was going to pick up his daughter from school. It was during that ordinary journey home that the encounter on the bus turned violent.
The dispute began when Jonathan got into an argument with another passenger who was talking loudly on the phone. The exchange escalated, and the other passenger then shot Jonathan in the stomach before taking off. What started as a disagreement between riders ended with gunfire inside a moving bus, turning a routine commute into a scene of panic.
Video captured the aftermath of the shooting. The footage shows Jonathan getting off the bus and limping a short distance before falling to the ground. The images underscored the seriousness of his wound and the speed with which the situation collapsed once the shot was fired, leaving him struggling in the street as the gunman got away.
The bus had stopped on East Tremont Avenue and White Plains Road, a spot that is not a bus stop, which is part of what drew attention to the scene. When people came out, it was chaos. One angle shows people running from the bus, with one person seen sprinting around the corner down White Plains Road as others scrambled to get clear of the danger.
