An 18-year-old man is dead and two other people are in the hospital after a shooting and robbery in the Bronx. According to News 12, the violence broke out during a car meetup in the borough, and police released the details on Monday afternoon, more than a day after the shooting took place.
Police identified the man who was killed as Worling Mendez, of the Bronx. Officers say the 18-year-old was shot in the head. Two other people were also hit by gunfire during the same incident and survived their wounds.
The two survivors are a 20-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man. According to police, the woman was shot in the foot and the man was shot in the chest. Both are recovering from their injuries in the hospital.
Investigators say all of it happened during a car meetup early Sunday morning. Police say the shooting unfolded shortly before 6 a.m. on East 233rd Street, under the Boston Road overpass near Provost Avenue, in the Eastchester section of the Bronx.
At the scene, tire marks were still visible in the roadway. News 12 reported that the only businesses in the immediate area are a scrap metal recycling plant and a Department of Sanitation facility, an isolated stretch where the car meetup had drawn people together before the gunfire.
Although the shooting took place in the early hours of Sunday, police did not make the information public until Monday afternoon. That delay meant the fatal shooting and the two additional victims were only confirmed by investigators more than 24 hours after the incident.
As it stands, police have described the case as a shooting and robbery that left Worling Mendez dead and two others wounded at the car meetup. The investigation into who opened fire on East 233rd Street, and what led to the shooting, is continuing.
