Police in the Bronx are hunting for the person responsible for the fatal stabbing of a father, a killing that has left a family reeling and a neighborhood shaken. Detectives have identified the man who was killed as Leonardo Sanchez, 46, and are appealing for the public's help as they try to track down the person who took his life in a sudden burst of violence on a city street.
Part of the deadly encounter was captured on video that investigators have been reviewing. In the footage, Sanchez, described as wearing a black shirt and jeans, is seen caught up in a fight with three other men. As the confrontation escalates, other people can be seen stepping in and trying to break it up, an effort to defuse the clash before it could turn any more dangerous.
For a moment, it appeared the situation might be winding down. Sanchez walked away from the group and got into a parked car, closing the door behind him in what looked like an attempt to remove himself from the trouble. Instead of ending there, however, the violence followed him to the vehicle, where the most brutal moment of the entire episode was about to unfold.
According to police, a man wearing a black baseball cap and a white tank top walked up to the parked car and opened the door. The attacker then lunged his arm into the vehicle, directly toward where Sanchez was sitting. In those few seconds, police say, Sanchez was stabbed multiple times, leaving him gravely wounded inside the car he had climbed into moments earlier.
Emergency responders rushed the 46-year-old to Saint Barnabas Hospital in a desperate bid to save him. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Sanchez could not be saved and was pronounced dead, turning what had begun as a street altercation into a homicide that detectives are now working to solve.
For those who knew him, the loss has been almost impossible to absorb. His grieving family, speaking by phone, described a man who never deserved to die this way, remembering him as a lovely and very polite person who was always willing to share with everybody and to help anyone who needed it. The news that he was the victim, one relative said, came as a profound shock.
For now, the person who carried out the stabbing remains at large. Police say no arrests have been made, and they are urging anyone with information that could help identify the attacker to come forward and contact investigators.
