Police in the Bronx are searching for two suspects they believe are behind a string of armed jewelry robberies across the borough. According to News 12, investigators say the same duo is responsible for three separate holdups carried out weeks apart, all following a strikingly similar pattern that has put detectives at the 43rd precinct on their trail.
The robberies were concentrated in a few Bronx neighborhoods. Police say two of the three heists happened in Highbridge, while the third took place in Unionport. In each case, investigators say, the pair confronted their victims, robbed them of their jewelry at gunpoint, and then fled the scene in a black Mercedes-Benz that has become a hallmark of the spree.
The first robbery in the series dates back to the end of May. Police say it happened on May 30, just before five in the morning, in front of 1404 Ogden Avenue. There, according to investigators, the duo struck a 49-year-old man with a gun and punched him multiple times before taking off with four necklaces. The victim was taken to the hospital but is expected to be okay.
Just over two weeks later, the pair allegedly struck again. Police say that on June 14, another man was robbed at gunpoint in front of 1134 White Plains Road at around 10:30 at night, part of what investigators describe as the same recurring method the two men have used at each stop along the way.
The third robbery followed only days after that. According to police, the robbers targeted yet another man in front of 979 Summit Avenue, making off with a necklace valued at around 6,000 dollars, once again singling out a victim wearing jewelry before slipping away from the scene.
Taken together, the three incidents have convinced investigators they are dealing with a single team working the Bronx. The consistency of the robberies, the same style of gunpoint confrontation, the focus on necklaces and other jewelry, and the use of a black Mercedes-Benz as a getaway car have all shaped the direction of the investigation.
For now, the search for the pair continues. Police have released surveillance images in the hope that someone will recognize the suspects, and News 12 reported that authorities are pressing ahead with the case out of the 43rd precinct as they work to identify and locate the two men before they can strike again.
