An elderly woman was struck and killed by a man on a motorcycle as she tried to cross the street in the Wakefield section of the Bronx on Monday afternoon, according to News 12. Neighbors who live in the area said they were heartbroken after the crash, which unfolded along White Plains Road, one of the busiest corridors in the northern Bronx.
According to the report from the scene, witnesses described seeing the moment the woman was crossing the street when a man on a motorcycle came toward her. The impact sent them flying, and witnesses said the woman was then dragged down the street before the motorcycle came to a stop.
Neighbors said the woman was left lying motionless in the roadway after the crash. FDNY EMS rushed her to Jacobi Hospital just after 2:30, and she was initially reported to be in critical condition. A short time later, News 12 received word that she had been pronounced dead at the hospital.
The crash happened near White Plains Road and East 225th Street. The NYPD's collision investigation squad was at the scene using a drone and different types of cameras to try to collect evidence and reconstruct exactly how the woman came to be struck.
Witnesses said that before first responders arrived, a crowd of neighbors rushed over to help. They described trying to do everything they could to comfort the woman as they waited for emergency crews, an effort that left many on the block shaken by what they had seen.
Police said the man on the motorcycle was involved in the collision that killed the woman, and the circumstances remained under investigation. Authorities had not released further details about him as the collision investigation squad continued its work.
