A 24-year-old man was shot and killed on a street in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn, and police are searching for the gunman who opened fire before getting away. The killing left a violent scene on a residential block and shook neighbors who live nearby.
The shooting happened on West 28th Street at around 9:20 in the morning. Police said the man was shot in the face and chest, and although he was taken to a hospital, he did not survive. Hours afterward, bloodstains, clothing and evidence markers were still visible on the street, where investigators worked to document the scene.
Emergency crews responded and the victim was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Video posted to the Citizen App earlier in the day had shown police converging on the location as they responded to the shooting.
The man who was killed was 24 years old. Police had not publicly released his identity as the investigation got under way, and detectives were working to establish the full circumstances of the shooting.
For people who live on the block, the violence was jarring. Some neighbors said they woke to the sound of gunshots, only to step outside and find a major crime scene at their own front doorstep. One described the unease of it, saying it made people nervous even in a neighborhood they know well.
As of the latest reports, no one had been arrested. Police said the man they are looking for ran away after the shooting and was last seen wearing a blue mask, and they appealed for anyone with information to contact investigators in Coney Island.
The killing came as Coney Island, one of the city's busiest summer destinations, filled with visitors ahead of the Fourth of July weekend. For the residential streets just off the boardwalk, though, the day brought a homicide investigation and a community left uneasy as detectives pressed on with their work.
