Authorities in Southern California have released footage from what they describe as a violent rampage carried out behind the wheel of a stolen car. According to police, the new and disturbing video shows a carjacking suspect who intentionally struck eight pedestrians during a terrifying police chase. The release of the video offered a fuller picture of an episode that put multiple people in danger across the area.
The sequence of events began with the theft of a vehicle under threat. According to police, the man carjacked a white Toyota Camry at knifepoint in Los Angeles last week. After taking control of the car, he then intentionally rammed eight pedestrians in nearby Culver City and led police on a wild chase through the area, turning the stolen vehicle into a weapon.
One part of the footage captured a particularly alarming moment during the rampage. According to the reporting, the driver knocked a man off of his bike at a gas station, then fled with the gas hose still attached to the car. The detail underscored how the suspect continued moving and striking people even in the middle of an ordinary, everyday setting.
Despite the scale of the violence, the outcome for those hit was not the worst possible. According to police, the victims ranged in age from 15 to 70 years old, and all of them survived. The wide range of ages reflected how the rampage swept up people who happened to be in the suspect's path, rather than any specific targets connected to him.
The pursuit eventually came to an end when the suspect could no longer keep going. According to the reporting, the driver was arrested after crashing near a McDonald's drive-thru. The crash brought the chase to a close and allowed officers to take the suspect into custody, ending the immediate threat to people in the surrounding streets.
With the suspect in custody, the case has now moved into the legal system with serious accusations. According to police, 45-year-old Juan Luis Estrada is facing multiple charges, including 10 counts of attempted murder. The number of counts reflects the number of people authorities say were intentionally struck during the rampage that unfolded across Los Angeles and Culver City.
