East Fishkill passes three year moratorium on data centers

The Hudson Valley town of East Fishkill has passed a three year moratorium on data centers, after being eyed for what would have been New York State's second largest data center. The proposed one gigawatt AI facility near I-84 drew concern over its electricity and water demands, and the town says the developer never filed a formal application.

The town of East Fishkill in the Hudson Valley has passed a three year moratorium on data centers, News 12 New York reported. The move adds to a continuing pushback against large AI data centers across the tri-state area, as communities weigh the footprint of the sprawling facilities being proposed near them.

East Fishkill was not a minor target in that wave. According to the report, the town was the site for what would have been the state's second largest data center, putting a small Hudson Valley community at the center of one of New York's biggest such proposals.

The plan on the table was substantial in scale. The project was envisioned as a one gigawatt AI data center, and it would have been located just south of Interstate 84, a major corridor running through the region.

For many residents, the concerns came down to the basic resources such a facility consumes. Neighbors say they are worried about the massive amounts of electricity needed to power such complex systems, as well as the large quantities of water needed to cool them.

The town also points out that the project never advanced through the proper channels. The town supervisor says the developer, Treetop Companies, never submitted a formal application for the project, leaving the proposal in an early and uncertain stage.

Local rules already stood in the way of the development as described. According to the town, zoning laws do not allow standalone data centers, meaning a project of this kind would have faced legal hurdles even without the new pause.

The three year moratorium functions as an added layer of protection while officials sort out the issue. By hitting pause, East Fishkill joins a growing list of communities trying to slow down or shape where energy hungry data centers can be built, as the boom in artificial intelligence drives demand for ever larger computing sites.
