Woman killed in alligator attack in Central Florida river

A 31-year-old woman from Orlando died after an alligator attacked her in a Central Florida river. Officials have released the 911 calls and captured two large alligators near the site, in what was the third such attack in the region in a week.

A 31-year-old woman from Orlando has died after she was attacked by an alligator while in a river in Central Florida, in a tragedy that officials addressed publicly as they pieced together what happened. Authorities described it as an incredibly tragic incident and said they were working to release as much information as possible while the case remains under active investigation.

The attack took place in the Little Big Econ State Forest, along the Econlockhatchee River in Seminole County, an area popular with people seeking out Florida's natural waterways. What began as time spent in the river turned into a fatal encounter, underscoring the hidden dangers that can lurk in the state's freshwater environments.

According to a public information officer for Florida Fish and Wildlife, the woman's boyfriend called 911 at around 1:30 in the afternoon, frantically trying to pull her from the alligator's grip. The released emergency calls captured the desperation of those moments, with the woman having been bitten on both of her arms as the attack unfolded.

When first responders arrived, the woman was rushed away as a trauma alert and taken toward a nearby trauma center. Despite those efforts, officials said she died while en route to the hospital, unable to survive the severity of her injuries from the encounter.

In the aftermath, wildlife officers moved to remove the threat from the waterway. Two large alligators, one measuring around twelve feet and another about thirteen feet, were captured in the river near where the attack happened, as authorities worked to determine which animal was responsible.

The death marked the third alligator attack in Central Florida in the span of a single week, a striking cluster for the region. Days earlier, an alligator had bitten a child in Marion County, while another attack left a snorkeler injured in the Rainbow River, raising alarm about encounters during the warm summer season.

Officials used the moment to remind residents and visitors that all freshwater bodies in the state of Florida contain alligators, urging people to be mindful whenever they are near rivers, lakes and other waterways. As the released 911 calls draw attention to the case, the investigation into the fatal attack continues.
