US health officials have raised the alarm over a powdered baby formula after four infants were sickened with botulism, a serious illness, following its use. The cases have prompted warnings to parents and caregivers as authorities work to keep the affected product out of homes and away from young children.
The product at the center of the concern has been identified. According to the CDC, Nara Organics Whole Milk Organic Powdered Formula has been linked to botulism cases reported in three states, drawing a direct connection between the formula and the infants who fell ill after being fed it.
Action had already been taken on the product before the latest warnings. The FDA says the formula was recalled last month, removing it from the market, and added that the recall is not expected to cause any shortages of baby formula for families who rely on such products.
Even so, the situation has continued to develop. According to the reporting, the CDC pointed to another infant case of botulism tied to the formula, a sign that the risk has not fully passed and that some of the recalled product may still be in circulation in people's homes.
