A Hawaii surfer is speaking out after being attacked by a shark near a popular beach off Oahu, in an incident that has prompted officials to warn people to stay out of the water. Koa Smith said the shark bit both of his legs, and he is now sharing more about how the terrifying encounter unfolded as authorities respond to the renewed danger along the shoreline.
Smith recalled that he had paddled out to a spot that he surfs all the time, expecting nothing out of the ordinary. The first sign of trouble, he said, felt as though something or somebody had come up and grabbed his ankle, then yanked on it as hard as they possibly could, a sudden and violent jolt that left him struggling to understand what was happening.
When he turned around to look, Smith realised it was a shark, and that it was right there by his side, thrashing in the water beside him. The discovery transformed what had begun as a routine session at a familiar break into a desperate fight to get away from the animal before it could do further damage.
The surfer told reporters he suffered severe injuries to both of his legs in the attack. His left leg was the worst affected, with what he described as roughly a 10-inch opening, a serious wound that underscored just how powerful and dangerous the encounter had been despite his survival.
Even amid the shock and pain, Smith and his wife, Danae, said they intend to return to the water and surf again. They described the outcome as the best case scenario of a much worse situation, and said they were deeply grateful, acknowledging that many people who find themselves in a similar position are not as lucky as he was.
Smith added that the experience would change how he approaches the ocean, saying he plans to be far more cautious in the future. In particular, he said he would no longer go out by himself in areas known for shark activity at feeding time, a lesson drawn directly from how close he came to a far more tragic ending.
In response to the attack, warning signs have been posted along the shore to alert beachgoers to shark activity in the area, and officials are encouraging everyone to stay out of the water. For those who still insist on going into the ocean, the advice is to at least consult a lifeguard beforehand so they can make a more informed decision about the risk.
