A tense standoff at a home in the Kingwood area of Houston has ended with authorities taking a man into custody, in a case made more alarming by how close it played out to schools. According to authorities, the man at the center of the operation had a sexual assault charge against him.
The situation began at around six in the morning and did not end until after eleven, stretching across much of the day. A heavy law enforcement presence responded, including SWAT officers, U.S. Marshals and the Harris County Sheriff's Office, which assisted at the scene.
The homeowner, who identified himself as Russ Gundrum, said he had no idea what was unfolding. He said the man authorities were after was his daughter's new husband, who he said had been brought into the home overnight by his daughter while he and his wife were asleep.
Gundrum described a jarring start to the ordeal, saying he woke to bright white lights inside the home. He said he grabbed his daughter and they walked outside with their hands up, after which he was left sitting in an officer's car for hours, picking up only scraps of information as the operation continued.
Compounding the family's ordeal, Gundrum said his wife is very seriously ill, dealing with a blood cancer as well as Parkinson's. He said that for a stretch of the standoff she was without her necessary medical equipment, until responders were eventually able to get her some oxygen. She was later taken to a hospital.
A major concern throughout was the location of the home, which sits across the street from an elementary school and close to a middle school and a college. Because it happened during the school day, students were kept inside as a precaution, something the district confirmed.
By the end, the home's windows had been severely damaged, and it remained unclear what repairs would be needed. Neighbors, many of whom said they were told nothing as the scene unfolded, described being shocked by the operation but relieved once it was over.
