Lamar CISD to open career technical center in Rosenberg

Lamar Consolidated Independent School District will open a new career and technical education center in Rosenberg, according to FOX 26, giving high school students hands-on training across a wide range of trades and professions. Programs will include culinary arts, plumbing, automotive technology, drones, digital communications, graphic design, cosmetology, dental, pharmacy and robotics. Students will learn on high-tech equipment that mirrors real workplaces, partner with local industry for work-based learning and internships, and be able to earn certifications and college credits. The center is expected to serve about 1,800 students a year and opens on the first day of school, August 11.

A fast-growing Texas school district is preparing to open a new facility designed to move students straight from the classroom toward the workforce. According to FOX 26, Lamar Consolidated Independent School District will open a career and technical education center in Rosenberg, giving high schoolers hands-on training across a wide range of trades and professions.

The range of programs on offer is broad. District officials said students at the center will be able to study fields including culinary arts, plumbing, automotive technology, drones, digital communications, graphic design, cosmetology, dental, pharmacy and robotics, spanning both skilled trades and higher-tech technical careers under one roof.

The aim is to make the learning feel as close to a real job as possible. Officials said students will learn in environments that mirror what they will actually see in the workplace, using high-tech equipment and technology in those spaces rather than practicing on outdated tools, so that the skills they build carry over directly.

The center is also built around close ties to local employers. The district said it would partner closely with industry so that students could get work-based learning experience out in the real world, and that they would learn from highly credentialed instructors, with opportunities such as internships along the way and, ideally, a job lined up upon graduation.

District leaders framed the effort as a direct response to the local job market. They said the district does a good job of listening to the business community and asking what kinds of jobs are available, and how the schools can create programming to train students to step directly into those roles, rather than preparing young people for jobs that do not exist.

There are clear rules for who can attend and what they can earn. Officials said any Lamar CISD junior or senior in a qualified course would be able to use the center after meeting the requirements in beginner classes at their own high school, and that students would also have the chance to earn certifications and college credits while there.

The district expects the center to make a significant mark on the community. Officials said the facility is expected to serve about 1,800 students each year and that it would open on the first day of school, August 11, with leaders describing it as more than just a building and as a place for students to discover their passions and the possibilities open to them.
