A Houston defense attorney has been charged with murder in connection with a deadly shooting near Rice University last month, according to court documents. Prosecutors have accused 45-year-old Michael Stewart Driver in the death of another man.

The shooting happened on June 27th. Prosecutors allege that Driver shot a man named Jesse Reyes at a home in the area.

Houston police said officers responded to the home and, when they arrived, found Reyes suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to investigators, Reyes and Driver knew each other and were at the home together. Authorities said Driver remained at the scene before he was taken into custody.

Court records show Driver had prior charges. He was charged with a DWI in 2019 in Harris County and a DWI in Travis County, but both were dismissed, and in 2023 he was charged with obstructing a highway or passageway in Travis County, which resulted in a deferred outcome.

Prosecutors have since filed a motion asking the court to set bail at 250,000 dollars, arguing that the charge involves a deadly weapon and that a substantial bond would help ensure the defendant returns to court while protecting the community. The Harris County District Attorney's Office also filed a motion to appoint an attorney pro tem in the case.
