Police in Jersey City, New Jersey, are investigating a deadly overnight shooting that left one man dead and another wounded, according to News 12. The gunfire erupted in the early hours of Sunday morning, around 2:30 a.m., in the area of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Orient Avenue. Officers responded to the scene as the investigation into the violence got underway.
Prosecutors said the man who was killed was a 38-year-old, identified by authorities as Jenardo Tejada. According to the report, he was found at the scene with gunshot wounds and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
A second man, who is in his 40s, was also shot during the incident. Officials said his condition had not been released, leaving open questions about the extent of his injuries as he was treated for the gunshot wound he suffered in the shooting.
At the time of the report, police said no suspects had been identified in connection with the shooting. Investigators appealed to the public for help, asking anyone with information about the gunfire to contact the Jersey City Police Department as they worked to piece together what had happened.
Neighbors who live in the area said the violence had become all too familiar. One resident described being taken aback by gunfire so early in the day, saying he was shocked because he did not expect to see something like that so early in the morning.
Others on the block expressed a weary resignation about repeated violence in the neighborhood. One person said such incidents seemed to happen almost every day, and urged people to stay safe and to stay off the streets. The death of the 38-year-old man near Martin Luther King Jr. Drive added to those concerns, as Jersey City police continued their investigation and renewed their appeal for any information that could help.
