Deputies in the Houston area are investigating a deadly overnight shooting that left a young man dead inside a vehicle. According to FOX 26, a 19-year-old was found shot to death inside a car in the Katy area, and the Harris County Sheriff's Office has opened a homicide investigation as it searches for whoever was responsible.
The shooting unfolded in the early morning hours. Deputies said they were dispatched at around 2:50 a.m. to the intersection of FM 529 and Grand Parkway in Katy, where they found the victim inside a vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds. He did not survive, turning a quiet stretch of the suburb into an active crime scene overnight.
Investigators believe the gunfire came from another vehicle. According to the sheriff's office, witnesses described a gray-colored sedan, possibly a Hyundai, that was seen driving along the passenger side of the victim's car before several shots were fired from that vehicle into the one the victim was in.
The physical evidence appeared to point in the same direction. Investigators said the bullet holes were all entering the car from the outside, on the passenger side, and that they did not believe the victim had fired any shots himself, an indication that he was targeted from the passing car rather than caught in an exchange of gunfire.
For now, the search for a suspect remains wide open. Deputies said they had no suspect description and were actively looking for the gray sedan, adding that they had not received any further calls or information about the vehicle since the shooting. Officials also said the victim did not appear to have a criminal record.
The investigation has shut down part of a busy intersection. Deputies said FM 529 and Grand Parkway would remain closed for a time while they processed the scene, and that because the area is a newly developed neighborhood, they expected to find plenty of cameras and would be reviewing toll records and business surveillance video in search of leads.
Authorities are now asking the public for help. The Harris County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit urged anyone with information to come forward and pointed people to Crime Stoppers, as detectives worked to establish where the victim had been before the shooting and who may have been behind the wheel of the gray sedan.
