King County deputies have released video of the arrest of a registered sex offender who now faces felony charges in a case involving a teenage girl. The release of the footage has brought renewed attention to the case, which authorities say began with a disturbing encounter caught on camera.
According to court documents, the man befriended a 16-year-old girl and bought her food before the situation turned threatening. Prosecutors say that after the girl got into his car, he threatened her, an account that forms the basis of the charges he is now facing.
Deputies identified the suspect as 52-year-old James Parrish. He was taken into custody when he returned to the same store the following day, with the arrest recorded on the video released by the sheriff's office, in which a deputy is heard repeatedly instructing him to step out.
Adding to the seriousness of the case, Parrish was already on federal probation as a sex offender at the time of the incident. That status placed him under existing supervision, making the new allegations all the more significant for authorities handling the case.
Prosecutors charged Parrish with first-degree extortion and communicating with a minor for immoral purposes, both of which are felonies. A judge ordered that he be held, reflecting the gravity with which the court is treating the allegations against him at this early stage of the proceedings.
The decision by King County deputies to release the arrest video underscores the public-safety dimension of the case, involving a registered offender and a minor. The charges against Parrish remain allegations at this point, and the case is expected to move forward through the courts as proceedings continue.
