LAPD seizes massive cache of illegal fireworks worth $200,000 from South LA home, four people arrested

LAPD officers discovered over $150,000 worth of consumer fireworks stashed inside a home in South Los Angeles while serving a search warrant for a domestic violence incident. Every room was filled with boxes of fireworks, requiring five trucks to remove. The LAPD bomb squad was called in and the area was evacuated. Four people have been arrested.

Los Angeles Police Department officers made a startling discovery in South Los Angeles when they found a massive cache of illegal fireworks valued at over $200,000 stashed inside a residential home on East 85th Street. The discovery came while officers were serving a search warrant related to a domestic violence incident involving a firearm, making the find entirely unexpected. Every room in the house was filled with boxes upon boxes of consumer fireworks.

Out of an abundance of caution, LAPD immediately evacuated the surrounding area and called in their bomb squad to handle the removal of the fireworks. It took five full box trucks to clear the enormous quantity of illegal fireworks from the property, a scale that even caught the experienced LAPD officers by surprise. The fireworks were transported to the California Fire Authority for proper and safe disposal.

Four people have been arrested and charged with illegal possession of fireworks in connection with the incident. LAPD officials emphasized the extreme danger the stockpile posed to the community, noting that if a house fire or any ignition source had reached the fireworks, the resulting explosion could have been catastrophic for both the occupants and the entire neighborhood.

The scene was grimly reminiscent of a devastating explosion that rocked South Los Angeles five years ago in 2021, when police attempted to detonate homemade fireworks at a scene using a specially made containment vessel. That explosion injured over a dozen people and caused widespread damage to the surrounding neighborhood. Neighbors in the area today confirmed they vividly remembered that incident and expressed relief that this situation was handled without any injuries or explosions.

With the Fourth of July approaching, LAPD issued a reminder that all fireworks are illegal within the City of Los Angeles. Officers urged residents who know of locations where large quantities of fireworks are being stored to report them to the LAPD immediately. The incident underscores the ongoing challenge of illegal fireworks possession in Southern California, where the combination of dense urban neighborhoods and dry conditions creates particularly dangerous circumstances during the summer months.
