The shooting unfolded on a Tuesday night. Shots broke out at around 5:30 p.m. on Bowery by Stanton Street, in the heart of the Lower East Side. The gunfire erupted along a road lined with parked cars, in an area busy with people going about their evening, before the scene quickly filled with police.
The wounded boy was taken for urgent treatment. The 15-year-old was rushed to Bellevue, where he was listed in stable condition. While the wound to his leg was serious enough to require hospital care, his condition offered some reassurance amid what had been an alarming and fast-moving episode.
The sheer volume of gunfire was striking. One account at the scene described lots of shots, and crime scene investigators were left collecting multiple bullet casings from the street. At least half a dozen were counted along a single row of parked cars on Bowery, a measure of how many rounds had been fired in the confrontation.
