A crash that police believe may have been the result of drag racing struck a pedestrian in the Inwood section of New York, prompting a large emergency response and an ongoing investigation. The incident unfolded as one of several breaking stories in the area and left the intersection where it happened cordoned off while authorities worked the scene.
According to the account of what happened, the collision involved two cars, a Corvette and a Mercedes-Benz. The two vehicles crashed into each other right at the intersection, and the impact set off a chain of events that spread beyond the two cars directly involved in the wreck.
One pedestrian was struck by the Corvette during the crash. The sports car came to rest on one side of the street, next to a delicatessen, a sign of how far it travelled and how much force was involved before it finally stopped after the collision.
The driver and the passenger of the Corvette were taken to Harlem Hospital in stable condition. In total, a pedestrian and two other people were hurt in the crash, though the injuries were not described as life-threatening as the victims were treated.
One key element of the case remained unresolved as the investigation continued. The driver of the other vehicle fled the scene and, according to the latest information, was still being sought by police, turning the crash into a hit-and-run that authorities were working to track down.
The force of the collision also caught vehicles that had nothing to do with the crash itself. A parked moped was struck, along with two other vehicles that were parked on the side of the street, all of them drawn into the wreckage that spilled across the roadway.
Emergency crews worked to clear the scene as the morning went on, with at least two of the vehicles already removed and a third still waiting to be towed. Police continued their investigation into what caused the crash, with the possibility of drag racing among the scenarios being examined.
